PARTNERS OF UOGPS

The Office of the Special Representative aims to partner with the University of Ottawa to address conflict-related sexual violence. Drawing on the latest research, collaboration ensures that prevention and response efforts are informed by academic insights. This collaboration facilitates the integration of research findings into policies and programs through ongoing information exchange, technical collaboration, and joint problem-solving, leveraging modern and innovative technologies.

In ongoing conflicts, sexual violence is consistently employed as a method of warfare, terrorism, and political oppression. Its purpose extends beyond physical harm to survivors/victims, aiming to instill fear, exert dominance, and degrade individuals, their families, and entire communities.

The consequences of sexual violence are profound and far-reaching, impacting the health, social dynamics, and economic stability of survivors/victims, as well as their broader social circles and communities. Systematic and widespread sexual violence impedes post-conflict recovery by leaving enduring physical and psychological scars on survivors/victims, often leading to their exclusion from economic opportunities. It frequently results in survivors/victims being ostracized socially, causing fractures within families and undermining community cohesion. Historical patterns of impunity further exacerbate stigma and victim-blaming.

Key Areas of Collaboration:

  • Research on conflict-related Sexual Violence:

  • Academic courses and modules on conflict-related sexual violence.

  • Creation of physical and virtual spaces with customized tools for all students.

  • Academic consultation committee on conflict-related sexual violence.

  • Conflict-related sexual violence visiting fellowship programme.

  • Advisory and technical support to the Office of the Special Representative.

A research assistant was employed from May to August 2024 to support the UN Action: MARA Workstream.       The tasks included gathering data from UN reports to develop improved methods for assessing conflict-                 related sexual violence in conflict zones. The goal is to aid in developing a global Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Arrangements (MARA) database to ensure the systematic gathering of conflict-related sexual violence data is in line with the survivor-centred approach.
